I don’t have a Honda, but that part about sulfuric acid was eye-catching too . Fortunately, the MSDS for my wash soap was easy to find. No mentions of “sulfur” or “acid”. Well that’s nice to know.

Yeah, I was surprised there was no elaboration on the acid being in soap part. That will probably be it’s own story next week.

I wonder if there’s a faster way to know which cleaners have it, instead of looking up each MSDS individually. Maybe some rule of thumb like “oh they only put that stuff in aggressive wheel cleaning products” or something like that.

Was checking the “Citrus” soap I have... turns out the pH is 8, which makes it an alkali soap, lol.

There were other comments that clarified it and I think what happened was she read “sulfuric” somewhere and that translated to sulfuric acid.
But you should almost always be using a soap that is pH neutral. The only time you should be using one that isn’t neutral is when you’re stripping the paint, but even then you should be using automotive paint specific paints that are designed to gently strip away coatings and nothing else. Examples of those are Griot’s Surface Prep or CG Clean Slate. But I’ve never used any types of those soaps before. I prefer to use a high lubricity soap like Gtechniq GWash. I’m going to strip the paint anyways with the Fallout Remover (Sonax or Gtechniq) and then an alcohol based product like Gtechniq PanelWipe.
Moral of the story: you shouldn’t be using soaps on your car that have acid in them.

Also don’t ever use any wheel cleaners with acid in them.
